The science

Gamification

Stakes, the momentum bar, the heatmap and the needle turn showing up into something you can see and win.

What it does in Road Mates

  • Stake: real money on the line, returned phase by phase.
  • Momentum bar: energy that builds each time you prove or check in.
  • Heatmap: your profile cover fills in as you show up.
  • Needle: a balance you tip toward your future self.

How it works

  • Each element makes progress visible and gives a small reward for the next step.
  • None of it uses likes or follower counts. The signals measure your own effort.
  • The game layer sits on top of a real road with real proofs, so it rewards work that matters.

What the research found

The best meta-analysis we found looked at gamification in learning. It found small positive effects: g = 0.36 on motivation (16 comparisons, 2,246 people) and g = 0.25 on behavior (9 comparisons, 951 people).

Results were mixed. Large reviews lean positive, but many studies find no effect, and the effects on motivation and behavior were less stable when only the most rigorous studies were kept.

Limits

  • The evidence is from education, not adult goal pursuit.
  • Badges and points alone tend to fade. Our elements are tied to real proof, which is the design bet.
  • Much of what gamification does (making progress visible, adding stakes) is already counted under the needle and the stake, so we count only a small extra.
