Yoga Teacher Roadmap

How to become a Yoga Teacher, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

5 phases2–6 years18 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Building a Personal Practice

    6–12 months

Attending classes several times a week across styles and teachers, and developing a consistent home practice. By the end, you know which style you want to teach and can move through standard sequences with steady breath and alignment.

You're done when you can show

A practice log showing 6+ months of regular classes and home sessions.

    Resources

  2. Phase 2: Completing Foundational Teacher Training

    1–6 months

Enrolling in and finishing a 200-hour teacher training covering anatomy, sequencing, cueing, philosophy and teaching methodology. You produce lesson plans, practice-teach peers, and pass the program's assessments.

You're done when you can show

A 200-hour teacher training certificate (e.g. Yoga Alliance RYT-200 eligible).

    Resources

  3. Phase 3: Teaching Real Bodies Regularly

    3–6 months

Leading free or low-cost classes for friends, community centres, gyms or as a studio sub to build cueing confidence and handle mixed levels. You register with a credentialing body if relevant, get liability insurance, and refine a repeatable class format from feedback.

You're done when you can show

A log of 50+ taught classes plus proof of teaching insurance.

    Resources

  4. Phase 4: Landing Paid Recurring Classes

    3–9 months

Auditioning at studios and gyms, pitching corporate or private sessions, and securing a weekly schedule of paid classes. By the end you have a stable timetable and students who return to your classes specifically.

You're done when you can show

A published studio or gym schedule listing your recurring classes.

    Resources

  5. Phase 5: Specializing and Growing Following

    1–3 years

Taking advanced or specialty training (e.g. 300-hour, prenatal, yin, trauma-informed) and building your own offerings like workshops, retreats, private clients or online classes. You produce a distinct niche and a student base that sustains part- or full-time income.

You're done when you can show

A booking page or website showing your own sold workshops, privates or retreats.
