Pianist Roadmap

How to become a Pianist, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

6 phases8.5–16 years, plus ongoing practice15 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Building Technique and Reading

    2–4 years

Practicing scales, arpeggios, sight-reading and beginner repertoire daily under a teacher's guidance. By the end, you can read notation fluently and play intermediate pieces with correct fingering and steady rhythm.

You're done when you can show

A video of you performing an intermediate piece cleanly, or a graded exam certificate (e.g. ABRSM Grade 5).

    Resources

  2. Phase 2: Mastering Advanced Repertoire

    2–4 years

Shifting from exercises to learning demanding standard works across periods (Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy) and refining interpretation, tone and memorization. You produce a polished program of several contrasting advanced pieces.

You're done when you can show

A recorded 20–30 minute program of memorized advanced repertoire posted online.

    Resources

  3. Phase 3: Auditioning and Competing Publicly

    6–12 months

Preparing audition lists and performing under pressure for conservatories, music degree programs, competitions or festivals. You prove you can deliver consistently in front of judges and audiences.

You're done when you can show

An acceptance letter to a music program or a competition result certificate.

    Resources

  4. Phase 5: Booking Paid Performance Work

    1–3 years

Stopping student performance and actively seeking paid gigs: accompanying singers and instrumentalists, weddings, church services, events, chamber concerts and teaching. You build a professional website, demo reel and a reliable client list.

You're done when you can show

A website with demo recordings and a list of at least ten paid engagements.

    Resources

  5. Phase 6: Sustaining a Performing Career

    Ongoing

Running recurring concert series, recordings, collaborations, and teaching studio as a stable income mix. You prove a self-sustaining career with repeat bookings and a growing audience.

You're done when you can show

A released recording or published season schedule of booked concerts.
