Novelist Roadmap

How to become a Novelist, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Reading and Writing Short Fiction

    3–6 months

The person reads widely and analytically in their target genre while writing short stories and scenes to learn craft basics like point of view, dialogue, and structure. By the end they have a body of finished short pieces and a sense of their voice and genre.

You're done when you can show

A folder of at least five completed short stories or scenes with dates.

  2. Phase 3: Revising With Outside Feedback

    4–9 months

The person stops generating new pages and starts restructuring: rereading the draft, fixing plot and character problems, and sharing it with critique partners or beta readers. They iterate through multiple revision passes until the manuscript is polished and coherent.

You're done when you can show

A revised manuscript plus written beta-reader or critique-partner feedback notes.

  3. Phase 4: Querying Agents or Self-publishing

    6–18 months

The person shifts from writing to selling: drafting a query letter and synopsis and submitting to literary agents or publishers, or alternatively hiring editing and cover design to self-publish. They handle rejections and revise their pitch until they secure representation, a deal, or a live published book.

You're done when you can show

A signed agent or publishing contract, or a live retailer link to the self-published book.
