Copywriter Roadmap

How to become a Copywriter, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

5 phases1.5–2.5 years12 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Studying and Rewriting Proven Copy

    1–2 months

Reading classic copywriting books, hand-copying winning ads and sales letters, and rewriting real landing pages, emails and ads to practice headlines, offers and calls to action. By the end, the person has a folder of rewrites showing they understand persuasion structure.

You're done when you can show

A document of 20+ rewritten ads, emails or landing pages with before/after notes.

    Resources

  2. Phase 2: Building a Spec Portfolio

    1–2 months

Stops practicing on random copy and starts producing polished samples aimed at a chosen niche: a sales page, an email sequence, ad variations and website copy for real or fictional brands. Ends with a public portfolio that shows range and a clear specialty.

You're done when you can show

A live portfolio site linking 4–6 finished copy samples in one niche.

    Resources

  3. Phase 4: Delivering Measurable Results

    6–12 months

Stops chasing any gig and focuses on running real projects end to end, briefing, researching, writing, revising and tracking performance like open rates, conversions or click-throughs. Ends with documented results that turn into case studies and testimonials.

You're done when you can show

A published case study showing a copy project's metrics before and after.

    Resources

  4. Phase 5: Specializing and Raising Rates

    6–12 months

Moves from generalist work to a defined specialty (e.g. email, direct response, SaaS, brand voice), packaging services, raising prices or landing a staff or senior role. Builds a steady pipeline of referrals and retainers instead of one-off jobs.

You're done when you can show

A signed retainer agreement or full-time copywriter job offer letter.
