The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Diagnosing Baseline With Practice Test

    1 week

Take a full official-style TOEFL practice test under timed conditions and break down scores by section. Produce a gap list identifying weak skills (e.g., listening note-taking, speaking fluency, academic vocabulary) and set a target score based on the programs you're applying to.

You're done when you can show

A scored full-length practice test report with a written list of section weaknesses and target score.

    Resources

  2. Phase 2: Building Core Academic English

    2–4 months

Daily study of academic vocabulary, grammar repair, and heavy input from lectures, podcasts, and textbook-style articles. You stop testing and focus on raising general English level until you can follow university lectures and readings without constant translation.

You're done when you can show

A vocabulary log of 1,000+ academic words plus a listening/reading journal covering 30+ sources.

    Resources

  3. Phase 3: Drilling Section-specific Task Strategies

    1–2 months

Shift from general English to TOEFL formats: practice each question type, learn note-taking for listening, use templates for speaking responses, and write integrated and academic-discussion essays. Record speaking answers and get essays scored against official rubrics.

You're done when you can show

A folder of 40+ recorded speaking responses and 20+ rubric-scored essays showing score improvement.

    Resources

  4. Phase 4: Simulating Full Timed Exams

    3–6 weeks

Take full-length timed mock tests weekly, reviewing every error and adjusting pacing and stamina. Continue until mock scores consistently meet or exceed your target, then register for the official test date.

You're done when you can show

Three consecutive full mock test score reports at or above your target score.

    Resources

  5. Phase 5: Sitting the Official Test

    1–2 weeks

Handle registration, ID requirements, and test-center or home-test setup, then take the official TOEFL exam. Send scores to your chosen institutions, or retake after targeted review if the score falls short.

You're done when you can show

Official TOEFL score report meeting your target, sent to institutions.
