    1–2 months

Talking to dozens of people in a target market to find a painful, frequent problem they already spend money or time on. Ends with a written problem statement backed by interview notes and a clear target customer.

  2. Phase 3: Shipping to First Users

    2–4 months

Putting the product in front of early users, onboarding them personally, and iterating weekly based on usage and feedback. Ends when a small group uses it repeatedly or pays for it.

You're done when you can show

A dashboard screenshot showing 10+ active or paying users with retention over several weeks.

  3. Phase 4: Searching for Product-market Fit

    6–12 months

Stops building features on request and focuses on retention, pricing, and narrowing the ideal customer until demand pulls the product forward. Produces evidence that users would be very disappointed without it.

You're done when you can show

Retention cohort chart or survey showing 40%+ of users would be very disappointed without the product.
