Spanish Speaker Roadmap

How to become a Spanish Speaker, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

5 phases1.5–2.5 years17 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Drilling Sounds and Core Vocabulary

    2–3 months

Learning Spanish pronunciation, the most frequent 1,000–1,500 words, and present-tense grammar through spaced-repetition flashcards and a structured course. By the end you can read simple texts and form basic sentences about yourself and daily life.

You're done when you can show

A screenshot of a flashcard deck with 1,000+ mature cards or a completed A1–A2 course certificate.

    Resources

  2. Phase 2: Speaking With Tutors Weekly

    3–4 months

Shifting from solo study to regular live conversation with tutors or exchange partners, pushing through awkward pauses and learning past and future tenses in context. By the end you can hold a 30-minute conversation on familiar topics without switching to your native language.

You're done when you can show

A booking history showing 30+ completed conversation sessions on a tutoring or exchange platform.

    Resources

  3. Phase 3: Immersing in Native Media

    4–6 months

Replacing learner materials with native podcasts, TV series, books, and news, mining unknown words and shadowing native speech to train listening at natural speed. By the end you can follow a Spanish-language show without subtitles and read a novel with occasional lookups.

You're done when you can show

A log of 100+ hours of Spanish media consumed, including at least one finished novel.

    Resources

  4. Phase 4: Living Daily Life in Spanish

    6–12 months

Using Spanish for real tasks — travel or a stay in a Spanish-speaking country, volunteering, work calls, or local community groups — and correcting fossilized errors with targeted feedback. By the end you handle unscripted, fast, accented conversations and nuanced topics comfortably.

You're done when you can show

A recorded 10-minute unscripted conversation or presentation in Spanish on a complex topic.

    Resources

  5. Phase 5: Certifying Advanced Proficiency

    2–3 months

Preparing specifically for a recognized proficiency exam such as the DELE or SIELE at B2–C1 level, practicing timed writing, oral exams, and formal registers. By the end you hold an official credential verifying your fluency.

You're done when you can show

An official DELE or SIELE certificate at B2 level or higher.
