Italian Speaker Roadmap

How to become an Italian Speaker, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

4 phases1.5–2.5 years16 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Drilling Pronunciation and Core Vocabulary

    2–3 months

Learning Italian sounds, basic grammar (present tense, articles, gender), and the 500–1,000 most common words through daily spaced-repetition and a structured course. By the end, the person can read simple texts and form basic sentences aloud with correct pronunciation.

You're done when you can show

A screenshot of a spaced-repetition deck showing 800+ mature Italian cards.

  2. Phase 2: Speaking With Tutors Weekly

    4–6 months

Shifting from solo study to live conversation, booking regular sessions with tutors or exchange partners and forcing output on everyday topics while filling grammar gaps (past tenses, pronouns). By the end, the person can hold a 30-minute basic conversation without switching to English.

You're done when you can show

A recording of a 30-minute Italian conversation with a tutor or exchange partner.

  3. Phase 3: Immersing in Native Content

    6–9 months

Building listening and vocabulary range by consuming unscripted Italian podcasts, TV, news, and books daily, while continuing conversation to absorb idioms and regional speech. By the end, the person understands most native media without subtitles and handles the subjunctive and conditional in speech.

You're done when you can show

A reading log of 3+ Italian novels finished or 100+ hours of native audio/video tracked.

    Resources

  4. Phase 4: Living Through Italian Daily

    6–12 months

Using Italian for real-life tasks — extended stays in Italy, work, friendships, or discussing complex topics like politics and emotions — and correcting residual errors through native feedback. The person proves fluency by passing a recognized upper-level exam such as CILS or CELI at B2/C1.

You're done when you can show

A CILS, CELI, or PLIDA certificate at B2 level or higher.
