The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Learning Search Fundamentals

    1–2 months

Studying how search engines crawl, index and rank pages through Google's documentation and free courses, and learning keyword research, on-page optimization and basic technical SEO concepts. By the end, the person can explain ranking factors and run a basic audit on any page.

  2. Phase 2: Ranking Your Own Site

  3. Phase 3: Optimizing Sites for Clients

    3–6 months

Taking on real projects for small businesses, nonprofits or freelance clients: conducting technical audits, implementing fixes, building links, and reporting results. The person produces measurable traffic or ranking improvements for sites they don't own.

You're done when you can show

A case study showing before-and-after organic traffic for a client site.

    Resources

  4. Phase 4: Landing an SEO Role

    1–3 months

Packaging case studies into a portfolio, earning tool certifications like Google Analytics or Semrush, and applying to agency or in-house SEO positions while doing tool-based assessment tasks. The phase ends with a signed offer or a steady roster of paying clients.

You're done when you can show

A signed job offer or contracts with at least two retained SEO clients.

    Resources

  5. Phase 5: Owning Organic Growth Strategy

    1–2 years

Running full SEO strategy for sites at scale: prioritizing technical, content and link-building work, forecasting traffic, and coordinating with developers and writers. The person proves they can deliver sustained organic growth and tie it to business revenue.

You're done when you can show

A report showing year-over-year organic traffic and conversion growth attributed to your strategy.
