Blockchain Developer Roadmap

How to become a Blockchain Developer, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

6 phases11–19 months19 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Learning Programming and Blockchain Fundamentals

    2–3 months

Building general coding skill in JavaScript or Python while studying how blockchains work: hashing, public-key cryptography, consensus, transactions, and gas. By the end, the person can explain a block's lifecycle and write small scripts that read on-chain data via an RPC provider.

You're done when you can show

A GitHub repo with scripts that query wallet balances and transactions from a public blockchain RPC.

    Resources

  2. Phase 2: Writing and Testing Smart Contracts

    2–3 months

Learning Solidity (or Rust for Solana) and writing contracts locally with Foundry or Hardhat, covering tokens, NFTs, access control, and events. The focus is unit and fuzz testing every contract and deploying to a testnet.

You're done when you can show

A repo of tested contracts with a verified testnet deployment link on a block explorer.

    Resources

  3. Phase 3: Shipping Full-stack Dapps

    2–3 months

Connecting contracts to web frontends using ethers.js/viem and wallet libraries, handling signing, transaction states, and indexing with tools like The Graph. Produces one or two complete decentralized applications that real people can use on testnet or mainnet.

You're done when you can show

A live dApp URL with its open-source repo and deployed contract addresses.

    Resources

  4. Phase 4: Studying Security and Auditing Code

    2–3 months

Shifting from building to breaking: reading audit reports, solving challenges like Ethernaut or Damn Vulnerable DeFi, and learning reentrancy, oracle manipulation, and upgradeability pitfalls. The person participates in public audit contests and documents findings.

You're done when you can show

A profile on Code4rena, Sherlock, or similar showing submitted or accepted findings.

    Resources

  5. Phase 6: Landing a Paid Role

    1–3 months

Packaging the portfolio, targeting crypto job boards and DAO contributor programs, and passing technical interviews that include live Solidity and security questions. Ends with a paid position or retained contract building production smart contracts.

You're done when you can show

A signed offer letter or contract for a blockchain developer role.
