Python Developer Roadmap

How to become a Python Developer, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

5 phases6–12 months17 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Drilling Core Python Syntax

    1–2 months

Working through a structured course or book daily, writing small scripts covering data types, control flow, functions, classes, and the standard library. By the end, the person can solve beginner exercises without looking up basic syntax.

You're done when you can show

A GitHub repo with 30+ solved exercises or a completed course certificate.

    Resources

  2. Phase 2: Building Small Standalone Tools

    1–2 months

Stopping tutorials and writing original scripts that solve real problems: file automation, web scraping, CLI tools, API consumers. Learns Git, virtual environments, pip, and debugging along the way.

You're done when you can show

Three original tools on GitHub, each with a README explaining usage.

    Resources

  3. Phase 3: Shipping a Full Application

    2–3 months

Picking a specialization track (web with Django/FastAPI, data, or automation) and building one substantial project end to end with a database, tests, and deployment. Produces a live, working application someone else can use.

You're done when you can show

A deployed app URL plus its GitHub repo with tests and CI passing.

    Resources

  4. Phase 4: Writing Production-quality Code

    1–2 months

Refactoring and contributing to others' code: adding type hints, writing pytest suites, following PEP 8 and code review feedback, and submitting pull requests to open-source projects. Proves the ability to work inside an existing codebase with collaborators.

You're done when you can show

Links to two merged pull requests in open-source or collaborative repos.
