Professional Poker Player Roadmap

How to become a Professional Poker Player, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

5 phases2–3.5 years or longer16 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Learning Rules and Fundamentals

    1–2 months

Learning hand rankings, positions, pot odds, and preflop ranges for one format (e.g. No-Limit Hold'em cash) through books, courses, and free play-money or micro-stakes games. By the end, the person can play a session without basic errors and explain why each preflop decision was made.

You're done when you can show

A written preflop range chart and notes from one completed beginner course or book.

    Resources

  2. Phase 2: Grinding Micro-stakes Volume

    4–8 months

Playing high volume at the lowest real-money stakes with a small, dedicated bankroll, tracking every hand in tracking software and following strict bankroll rules. The goal is to produce a large sample that shows whether the player beats the game.

You're done when you can show

Tracking software graph showing a positive win rate over 50,000+ hands.

    Resources

  3. Phase 3: Studying and Fixing Leaks

    3–6 months

Shifting time from pure volume to off-table study: reviewing hand histories, using solvers, joining a study group or getting coaching, and patching specific leaks found in the stats. The output is a measurably improved win rate and documented strategy notes.

You're done when you can show

Leak-tracking document with before/after stats showing improved win rate on targeted spots.

    Resources

  4. Phase 5: Playing Poker for Income

    12+ months

Treating poker as a business: fixed schedule, separate living expenses and bankroll, tax and legal compliance for the local jurisdiction, and ongoing study. The person proves they can cover living costs from poker consistently through downswings.

You're done when you can show

Twelve months of income records showing poker winnings covering living expenses.
