The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Building Academic Admission Record

    1–4 years

Completing the qualifying degree (an undergraduate degree in the US, or a law degree directly in many other countries) while keeping grades strong and preparing for any admissions test like the LSAT. Ends with a competitive application submitted and an offer of admission to a law program.

You're done when you can show

An acceptance letter from an accredited law school or law degree program.

    Resources

  2. Phase 2: Studying Core Legal Doctrine

    1 year

Reading cases, briefing them, and writing exams in contracts, torts, property, criminal law, constitutional law and procedure. Produces a transcript showing command of foundational doctrine and a legal writing sample.

You're done when you can show

A first-year transcript or graded legal research and writing memo.

    Resources

  3. Phase 4: Passing the Licensing Exam

    3–24 months

Full-time drilling of practice questions, essays, and performance tests for the jurisdiction's licensing exam (e.g. the US bar exam or the UK SQE), plus character and fitness checks or a required training contract/pupillage where applicable. Ends with formal admission to practice.

You're done when you can show

A certificate of admission or bar/registration number from the licensing authority.

    Resources

  4. Phase 5: Handling Matters Under Supervision

    2–4 years

Drafting documents, researching issues, managing client communications, and appearing in lower-stakes hearings or deals while senior lawyers review the work. Produces a track record of completed matters and develops judgment in a chosen practice area.

You're done when you can show

A performance review or list of matters handled with supervising partner sign-off.

    Resources

  5. Phase 6: Owning Cases and Clients

    Ongoing

Independently running matters end to end, leading negotiations or trials, and bringing in or retaining clients. Proves the ability to practice autonomously with a reputation in a specialty.

You're done when you can show

A portfolio of matters where you were lead counsel, or a client roster you originated.
