Game Developer Roadmap

How to become a Game Developer, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

6 phases2–5 years10 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Learning Engine and Programming

    2–4 months

Following tutorials and coursework in one engine (Unity, Godot, or Unreal) and its language, recreating small mechanics like movement, collisions, and UI. By the end, you can build a simple interactive scene without copying code line by line.

You're done when you can show

A repo containing three or more small mechanic prototypes built from scratch.

    Resources

  2. Phase 4: Polishing a Portfolio Project

    4–8 months

Choosing one concept and taking it to a polished vertical slice or small commercial release, focusing on game feel, bugs, performance, and playtesting. This becomes the centerpiece showing production-quality work in your specialty (gameplay, tools, graphics, etc.).

You're done when you can show

A public Steam/itch.io page or polished demo video of the finished project.

    Resources

  3. Phase 5: Applying and Interviewing At Studios

    2–6 months

Building a portfolio site, tailoring applications to studios, completing programming tests and art/design tests, and networking at events or Discords. Alternatively, pitching to publishers if going indie.

You're done when you can show

A signed job offer letter or publishing/funding agreement.

    Resources

  4. Phase 6: Shipping Titles Professionally

    1–3 years

Working on a production team, owning features through milestones, code review, and certification until a game ships. You prove you can deliver within a pipeline and earn a credited release.

You're done when you can show

Your name in the credits of a released commercial game.
