Commercial Private Pilot Roadmap

How to become a Commercial Private Pilot, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

7 phases1.5–2.5 years22 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Securing Medical and Ground School

    1–2 months

You obtain an aviation medical certificate from an approved aviation medical examiner, register as a student pilot with your aviation authority (e.g. the FAA in the US or CAA in the UK), and start ground school on aerodynamics, weather, navigation and regulations. By the end you are cleared to fly and have the theory base to start lessons.

You're done when you can show

A valid first- or second-class aviation medical certificate.

    Resources

  2. Phase 3: Completing Private Pilot Checkride

    2–4 months

You fly solo cross-countries, night and navigation training, pass the private pilot written knowledge test, and polish maneuvers to test standards. You finish by passing the practical test with an examiner.

You're done when you can show

Your private pilot licence/certificate issued by your aviation authority.

    Resources

  3. Phase 4: Earning Instrument Rating

    3–4 months

You train to fly solely by reference to instruments, practicing holds, approaches and IFR procedures in the aircraft and simulator, and pass the instrument knowledge test. You finish by passing the instrument checkride.

You're done when you can show

Licence showing the instrument rating endorsement.

    Resources

  4. Phase 5: Building Hours and Cross-country

    6–12 months

You fly as pilot in command on longer cross-country and night flights to reach the commercial experience minimums (e.g. 250 total hours in the US). You produce a logbook that meets every commercial time requirement.

You're done when you can show

Logbook totals page showing commercial experience minimums met.

    Resources

  5. Phase 6: Training Commercial Maneuvers and Checkride

    1–3 months

You switch from logging time to precision training: commercial maneuvers like chandelles, lazy eights and power-off landings, plus complex or high-performance aircraft time, and pass the commercial knowledge test. You finish by passing the commercial practical test.

You're done when you can show

    Your commercial pilot licence/certificate.

    Resources

  6. Phase 7: Landing First Paid Flying Job

    1–3 months

You apply for entry-level paid flying such as flight instruction (after adding an instructor rating), banner towing, aerial survey, skydive drops or charter work. You finish by flying your first flights for pay.

You're done when you can show

Signed offer letter or employment contract for a paid pilot position.
