The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Confirming Eligibility and Enrolling

    1–2 weeks

Check that you meet the entry requirements: a bachelor's degree, being within a set window of graduating, or enough combined work and university hours. Then create a CFA Institute account, pay the enrollment and Level I fees, and pick an exam window. You finish with a booked exam date and a study plan built around roughly 300 hours of prep.

  2. Phase 2: Grinding Level I Fundamentals

    4–6 months

Work through the full Level I curriculum: ethics, quantitative methods, economics, financial reporting, corporate finance, equity, fixed income, derivatives and alternatives. Drill question banks and take timed mock exams. You finish by sitting and passing the Level I computer-based exam.

  3. Phase 3: Mastering Level Ii Valuation

    5–7 months

Shift from breadth to applied analysis, using vignette-style item sets on asset valuation, financial statement adjustments and modeling. Practice solving case-based questions under time pressure, then sit and pass the Level II exam.

  4. Phase 4: Writing Level Iii Portfolio Answers

  5. Phase 5: Logging Qualifying Investment Experience

    0–3 years

Build up the required hours of relevant work in the investment decision-making process, such as analysis, portfolio management or risk. This often overlaps with the exam phases. Document your roles, duties and hours, and line up supervisors or colleagues who can serve as professional references.

You're done when you can show

A completed work-experience record in your CFA Institute account meeting the required hour threshold.

    Resources

  6. Phase 6: Applying for Charter Membership

    1–2 months

Submit the CFA Institute membership application with your work-experience details, professional references and a signed professional conduct statement. Optionally join a local CFA society. Once you are approved, you receive the charter and can use the CFA designation.

You're done when you can show

Your official CFA charter certificate or listing in the CFA Institute member directory.
