Australia Skilled Migrant Roadmap

How to become an Australia Skilled Migrant, phase by phase: what you do in each one, how long it takes, and the proof that shows you're done.

6 phases10 months to 3 years17 resources

The road, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1: Mapping Occupation and Points

    2–4 weeks

You match your work history and qualifications to an ANZSCO occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list and identify the correct assessing authority. You run the points test and decide which visa pathway (189, 190 or 491) is realistic, producing a clear points target.

You're done when you can show

A completed points calculation naming your ANZSCO code, assessing authority and target visa subclass.

    Resources

  2. Phase 2: Securing Positive Skills Assessment

    2–4 months

You gather certified degrees, transcripts, detailed employer reference letters and payslips, then submit them to your assessing authority (e.g. ACS, Engineers Australia, VETASSESS). You respond to any requests until you receive a positive outcome that confirms your occupation and countable experience.

You're done when you can show

A positive skills assessment outcome letter from the relevant assessing authority.

    Resources

  3. Phase 3: Maximising English Test Score

    1–3 months

You prepare for and sit an accepted English test such as PTE Academic or IELTS, retaking as needed to reach Proficient or Superior English. Each extra band adds points, so you keep testing until the score lifts you above recent invitation cut-offs.

You're done when you can show

An official PTE or IELTS score report meeting Proficient or Superior English levels.

    Resources

  4. Phase 4: Lodging Eoi and Nominations

    3–12 months

You submit an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect with accurate points and apply for state or territory nomination where eligible. You monitor invitation rounds, update your EOI as points change, and pursue extra points like NAATI or Professional Year if stuck.

You're done when you can show

A SkillSelect invitation to apply letter for your chosen visa subclass.

    Resources

  5. Phase 5: Lodging Visa and Checks

    3–12 months

Within the 60-day window you lodge the visa application in ImmiAccount, uploading identity, employment, and relationship documents for all applicants. You complete health examinations, police certificates from each country lived in, and biometrics, then answer any case officer requests until the grant.

You're done when you can show

The official visa grant notice from the Department of Home Affairs.

    Resources

  6. Phase 6: Activating Visa and Relocating

    1–3 months

You make your initial entry before the deadline on your grant, then set up a Tax File Number, Medicare, bank account and housing. You job-hunt or start work in your nominated field, meeting any state nomination residence obligations.

You're done when you can show

A Medicare card or signed Australian lease plus your entry-stamped arrival record.
